A fellow member on Custom Fighters, by the username "goon73" has just recently finished qualifying for the "Bun Burner" certification with the Iron Butt Association. His story, has inspired me to at least consider qualifying myself.
I am planning on heading back up to New York at least to visit my family that lives up there, and possibly for a new job which I'm pursuing. I figured I'd ride back up north during the summer, and (if I were staying) have my stuff shipped up via moving company.
I figure, if I'm going to be riding back up to NY, why not make an adventure of my journey? To qualify for the Bun Burner, you need to document 1500 miles in 36 hours.
So here's how the idea came to my mind. I need to get from Southwest FL up to Long Island, NY... What are the places along the way that are worth riding to between here and there; and will those way-points net me 1500 miles? This is what I came up with:
- Georgia's Dragon
- Tail of the Dragon (Deal's Gap)
- Skyline Drive / Blue Ridge parkway
So I jumped onto Google Maps and mapped my town to my sister's town on Long Island. I then made waypoints along the route so that I could hit all three places during the trip.
The trip, driving-time only works out to be 1,653 miles, which Google says is about 30 hours. That leaves me with six hours left if I want to qualify for the Bun Burner. The good news is that I'd have 153 miles leeway, so I might not make it all the way to Long Island, but I could still get the 1500 miles within the 36 hours.
Here's how I break-down the travel time:
I'll have to stop for gas every 125 miles to stay on the safe side; that's 14 gas stops along the way. If I give myself 10-minutes per stop to gas up, eat/drink, and drain the main vein, that would be 2-hours, and 20-minutes total. So now I'm down to 3-hours and 40-minutes for sleep (ouch). Of course, this is still figuring on getting all the way to Long Island within the 36-hour time limit. If I just want to make the 1500-mile mark within that time, I gain at least two hours of rest time.
I don't think this will be easy, but I think that this is totally doable. Not only that, but it would be one hell of a ride. I mean I'd get to hit the three best places to ride a motorcycle on the east coast - all on the same trip! It would be a tough ride; but it would be one I could tell the grandkids about.
I want to hear what you guys think about this. Leave a comment below with any ideas/criticisms/advice you have about this. I want to know what you think.
Here's a map of the route to give you a visual idea:

What time of year you planning on doing this? It's going to be humid, rainy, or really cold whichever part of the year you choose. But that definitely seems like a kickass route. I might have to steal it from you some time in the future.
ride time
It is likely going to be on my way back down from fighter fest 08 (end of July). I am planning on visiting my brother and his wife and my new nephew while I'm in the Northeast. Since i won't be making the group ride back down to the dirty-dirty, I figured I'd hard-core it and do an Iron Butt.
